High Court of Sikkim is one of the oldest High Court in the North East States. Its Existence has been recognised from the date of existence of Kings Court during Monarchical time. The history of the court can be traced back to 1955, when the High Court of Judicature (Jurisdiction and Powers) Proclamation, 1955 was issued to establish a High Court in Sikkim. Upon merger, Sikkim became the 22nd State of India.

Over the year the number of litigation in the High Court of Sikkim and other four District Courts of the State have increased compared to initial period and same is likely to increase in the coming year. The demand for access to justice is increasing in the coming year. The demand for access to justice is increasing day by day. The  consciousness towards adjudication of legal rights through judicial process amongst the younger conscious generation have also been increased.

Legal profession have been seriously and opted as potential profession. As per estimation, approximately 300 advocates are residing and practicing in the State of Sikkim at present. 

A Bar Association functioning at the High Court level would be advantageous to the advocates in the State of Sikkim to bring them closer to the other prestigious Legal Institutions, Bar Associations and Legal professionals of repute and jurists of the Country. This will sharpen the legal acumen of the local lawyers and bring them at par with National Level.

In the above said backgroung, it was felt necessary that the advocates generally practicing before various courts of Sikkim and in particular practicing before the High Court of Sikkim should associate together in order to meet their common aspirations: to work for the development and welfare of it member; to strive towards strengthening the institutions (High Court & District Courts) in the State of Sikkim; to ensure Rule of Law and Administration of Justice in the State and to support all citizens in pursuit of justice.

Therefore, Sikkim High Court Bar Association has been formally formed on 22nd of January, 2021 to achieve above objectives.
